A Brief Study of Ganesh Economics

By Ramaa Sakhalkar

Bharat observed a power packed, energetic 10 day celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi from 18th to 28th of September. According to Traders’ Body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), over 20 crore made in India Ganesh idols are sold in the country every year during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, generating an estimated business of more than Rs 300 crores.

Mumbai, the financial and film capital of our country, that is a home to 21 million people has its biggest economic trigger in the form of this festival every year. While on an average, the number of visitors to the famous Siddhivinayak Mandir is 15000, the count went up to 2 lac on the first day itself. Festival related services like mandap decorators, idol makers, flower vendors, sweet shops, etc. saw a sharp rise in their sales.

The Retailers association of India too expects a 35% jump in sales of FMCG products. The sales are driven by offers and discounts up to 70-80%. Consumers usually put off purchases of large durable items like refrigerators, vehicles etc. The boom in business stores across central Mumbai is noticeably high, where the shopkeepers report a 45% rise in sales. The demand for pandal decorations across Mumbai, Pune and Nashik claim local sources was over 50% from last year.

Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav, a brainchild of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, is an absolute integrating force, binding the nation into a thread of happiness, reverence and devotion. What it accomplishes beyond this is its economic aid to businesses, both small-scale and large scale all over the country.
